You found a company! Really? Well, at least this is what we did. We are Christian Wende, Jendrik Johannes, Mirko Seifert and Florian Heidenreich. For the last years, we’ve been working as research associates at the Software Technology Group Dresden (Prof. Dr. Uwe Aßmann) and have recently launched a spin-off called DevBoost.

The goal of DevBoost is to exploit the industrial potential of the MDE tools and methods that were developed at our group over the last 5 years. Since tools themselves can be hard to sell, one must provide additional services on top. We call the common roof for these services “Software Modernization”. DevBoost has aims at becoming a leading provider for software analysis, migration and automated refactoring. In a nutshell, we can take a (big) piece of software and turn into something that is much more maintainable, understandable, or that runs on a different platform or framework. Sounds good, right?

The most important tools that form the foundation of DevBoost’s services are EMFText, a generator for textual DSL tooling, JaMoPP, a model-based implementation of Java, and FeatureMapper, a MDE tool for Software Product Lines. We use these tools extensively in customer projects as they allow for very efficient implementation of software systems. Also, the tools are applied to analyze and transform existing systems. Here, EMFText provides an efficient way to handle all kinds of textual artifacts into the modernization processes. JaMoPP is crucial to read, understand and transform Java code. The FeatureMapper allows for transforming software products into product lines.

From technological point of view MDE plays a central role for DevBoost, but this does not imply that customers mandate us because of this. The tools that we as service providers employ are a minor detail from a customer’s perspective. The important point is that we provide solutions to their very specific problems. MDE is the key to provide such solutions cheaper, in higher quality, and faster.
