Software directories not ready for SaaS
Have you ever tried to add your online software service to one of the many existing software directories (see this directory of software directories ) in the web?
Alternative income for open source software - Adopt a line of code
Via BusinessOfSoftware I learn about Miro , an open-source, non-profit video player and podcast client.
What it is special about Miro is the way their creators are trying to fund themselves to be able to continue working on the product.
As they say: Adopt a line of source code for just $4 a month, and together we can keep Miro alive and growing! You’ll receive a customized page and widgets that display your line of code. Even a little photo of your new buddy, and its personalized name!
Robert L. Glass on Forgotten fundamental facts about Software Engineering
Very interesting article by Robert L. Glass about the Frequently Forgotten Fundamental Facts about Software Engineering , a collection of vital facts that we should keep in mind when developing software.
Software Engineering 2.0 & Research 2.0
Using as a excuse the Software Engineering 2.0 & Research 2.0 CASCON 2009 Workshop , Jean-Marie Favre has launched an online community to discuss (quoting):
Call for action: Software Engineering Method and Theory
From: Ivar Jacobson
Hello,
You may have heard that the three of us have been quietly planning a "revolution". The goal is to re-found software engineering as a rigorous discipline.
Catchy Software Engineering conference/workshop acronyms
Robert Clarisó and Antonio Vallecillo point me the fruitful imagination of Software Engineers when it comes to name new conferences/workshops (and then people say we are boring!)
Some catchy SE acronyms:
- SEAFOOD (Software Engineering for Offshore and Outsourced Development)
- SHARK (SHAring and Reusing architectural Knowledge)
- QUOVADIS (Quantitative Stochastic Models in the Verification and Design of Software Systems)
Methods & Tools - a free software development magazine
Methods & Tools is a free software development magazine with practical knowledge, news and resources on software development: Software Testing, Project Management, Programming (Java,.NET, Ruby on Rails, Ajax), UML, Agile (eXtreme Programming, Scrum, Test Driven Development), Configuration Management, Databases, RUP, Software Analysis, Software Design, Software Quality Assurance, Software Maintenance, Software Process Improvement (CMMI), Software Development Tools, User Interface, etc.
What we actually know about software development by Greg Wilson
Today seems to be "the recommendation day". For those of you that do not follow (yet) Greg Wilson's I'd like to recommend Greg's presentation "Bits of evidence: What we actually know about software development and why we believe it's true" where he discusses the low standards for proof in software engineering (too many claims without any kind of empirical validation) and how we can start addressing this situation.
Software development tools directory
Via this blog I've discovered the Software Development Tools Directory , currently with 1518 references to tools that (may) assist software developers.
The directory is classified in many different categories (e.g. license type). It is surprising (even to me!) to see what happens when you sort the "open source" category according to the tools' popularity. These are the results (as of today):
- IceScrum (a tool for development teams using Scrum or another agile developement process)
Autistics are born software engineers
Curious article on Wired this month claiming that autistics are perfect for the job of software development. It seems that their excellent memory and strong attention to detail skills make them more precise and focused when most other minds go numb. Of course, as they say in the article, "clients must be prepared for a somewhat unusual working relationship" (and I guess that they are not well-suited for some of the tasks of the development process that require a more intense social activity, as requirements elicitation).
